You are in the market for a new roof and considering a metal roof for your replacement. The most common type of metal roof is a standing seam metal roof. Here are a few things you need to know about standing seam metal roofs.

A series of metal panels lock together at the seams or are seamed mechanically to create a standing seam metal roof system. The standing seams are called ribs and are usually between 12-24 inches apart. The panels are fastened under each of the ribs to allow the panels to glide back and forth. Metal roofs are subject to thermal expansion and this allows for that expansion and contraction.

Standing metal seam roofs have an extended life span. Most standing seam metal roofs come with a 30-year paint warranty; however, if your roof is properly installed and your attic is adequately ventilated, your roof could last up to 50 years under ideal conditions.

What Makes Up a Standing Seam Roof?
The standing metal seam roof is made up of different materials and components just as an asphalt shingle roof is. You have the roof decking, starter lock strip, underlayment, metal panels, clips and ridge capping. Starter lock strips hold your standing seam metal panels to the roof edges and keep it from flapping due to storms or wind. The underlayment will provide extra protection from high heat, ice and water. The metal panels make up the bulk of your roof and are the part of the roof you actually see. Hidden clips hold each panel in place on the roof decking and the ridge capping is installed at the peaks where the two slopes of a roof meet.

When Should You Replace Your Standing Seam Roof?
If you begin to see a lot of rust on your metal roof or the color is extremely faded, you probably need to replace your standing seam metal roof. This shouldn’t occur for about 30 years or more.  If anything scratches, dents or damages the painted finish of your metal roof, it also may need to be replaced. Lastly, strong storms, hail or wind may cause damage to the integrity of your metal panels requiring a roof replacement.
